Meta-xylene is an organic compound with a molecular formula of C8H10 and a molecular weight of 106. It is a colorless and transparent liquid with an odor similar to toluene. It is insoluble in water, but miscible in most organic solvents such as ethanol, ether and chloroform. Used as solvent, medicine, dye intermediate, perfume, etc.

Physical properties

Colorless transparent liquid with strong aromatic odor. Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol and ether.

It can dissolve benzyl alcohol, furfuryl alcohol, 2-chloroethanol, ethylene glycol monoacetate, furfural, dimethylformamide and acetonitrile at room temperature. Non-corrosive to metals.

Chemical nature

1. It is oxidized to isophthalic acid by chromic acid. The m-xylene reacts with fuming nitric acid to produce dinitrodimethylbenzene. Sulfonation reaction with sulfuric acid; Alkylation reaction can occur under the catalysis of aluminum trichloride.

2. Stability: stable.

3. Incompatible materials: strong oxidants, acids, halogens, etc.

4. Polymerization hazard: no polymerization.
